Get to Know Our Chickenshed Players
When Harley sat in the audience of Chickenshed NYC’s 2018 debut Showcase performance, she finally envisioned a theatrical home for her son Jack. Indeed, they were one of the first to sign up for Chickenshed Players workshops at Wetherby-Pembridge. Being non-verbal, Jack effuses his interest in all things musical by humming, drumming and clapping. Harley wondered how Jack would engage with the work and was thrilled to discover that he had all the teaching artists wrapped around his little finger after the very first day! Jack has grown up in a theatrical family enjoying their time together at autism-friendly performances on Broadway. Not quite used to being on stage yet, he was thrilled to see himself in Fantastical! even if the TAs had to chase him around with the green screen! Jack and his family enjoy long walks through the city especially the East River promenade where he appreciates, with all his senses, the activity on the river and the other passersby. When next you see Jack, take 30 seconds to say “hello”, so that he can focus and connect with you. We are so grateful that Jack has found a place to call his own at Chickenshed NYC.
Gabby first learned about Chickenshed through Cyndi, when she danced at Shuffles. Intrigued by what she
heard, she and her brother Sammy also signed up as founding Players. With two other younger siblings, the household is full of energy and laughter. Gabby and Sammy enjoy the opportunity to sing and dance together at Chickenshed, supporting each other in every way. It is the only activity, outside of family time, in which they take part equally, some
thing their mom and they
appreciate. Gabby enjoyed being part of Fantastical!, especially doing the rope dance. Sammy loved seeing everyone again during the rehearsals, including a few friends from school. Outside of Chickenshed, Gabby dances and hopes to go to a performing arts high school, while Sammy appreciates classical music and is enjoying learning the violin at home. Maybe he can play some day at Chickenshed! Together the family likes to see theatre and eat – especially at their favorite gelato and candy shops. Maybe they will share their secret spots if you ask!
Rei’Lyn is one of the newest members of CP2. Thankfully, her mom found Chickenshed while browsing online for a remote learning activity. Rei’Lyn loved her first zoom session and was imme
diately hooked! Being part of Fantastical! was, of course, fantastic – she brought tons of friends and family to the performance where she most enjoyed singing and signing “Take Hands”. Rei’Lyn’s favorite place in New York is her neighborhood zoo, the famous Bronx Zoo, where she loves to watch the hyenas, sloths, zebras and giraffes. At home Rei’Lyn keeps busy playing video games, drawing and reading her current favorite graphic novel series “Dog Man” by Dave Pilker. Maybe she will write her own comic series one day but for now she will happily read her favorite to you!! We are so happy Rei’Lyn has joined the Chickenshed NYC family!
Thank You for Coming to Fantastical!
If you watched Chickenshed NYC’s original musical Fantastical!, you will know it was a quirky and fun look at life during Covid-19. You still might be wondering though – how did they create it?! As with all things Chickenshed, it was a collaboration. Players wanted to celebrate surviving the pandemic but at the same time didn’t want to speak the word in the show. The team brainstormed ideas that were similar to challenges in real life- masks, toilet paper, isolation, zoom, and not being able to touch. With that in mind, Fantastical! came to be.
One of the players wanted to be a character fashioned after the gentleman who cleaned the podium at the inauguration. Recognizing no words were needed, teaching artists Dalton and Adam created imagery and music with a nod to the silent film era of Charlie Chaplin. The younger players had designed their own Blurgh puppets during the semester so they sang a welcome song for the Expeditionists. The mismatching shoe dance scene brought to life an original poem by our talented artistic ambassador Keilly Swift and the finale “Stronger Now” is a Chickenshed NYC original, sung by artistic ambassador Colton Ryan and our very own Adrian Bumpas. Fantastical! celebrates our collective resilience with humor and joy while showcasing the amazing talent of our whole community. Congratulations and thank you to everyone!!
