ADORÉ

Meet Adoré - an energetic 11-year-old who lives to dance!  Adoré joined Chickenshed just over a year ago after participating in an outreach program at Graham-Windham in West Harlem. Her mom Isis, believes that Adoré enjoys Chickenshed because of its energy and community and Adoré echoes that sentiment describing it as respectful and kind.  What does she love most about Chickenshed? Well, DANCING of course!! When she isn't dancing at Chickenshed, she is doing both dance and cheer at school.

Her favorite dance genres are majorette and hip hop, and she is a huge fan of our talented practitioner, Lance. As a relative newcomer to New York City, Adoré enjoys exploring her neighborhood, especially Saint Nicholas Park. Be sure to look out for her dance solo in the upcoming June show - Both Sides Now. Welcome to the family Adoré!

THEA

Thea is 14 and has been part of Chickenshed for three years. She learned about Chickenshedfrom her science teacher at Trevor Day School and we are grateful for that!

Because of her dedication and passion for Chickenshed, Thea has been invited to be an leader-in-training this year, something she is very excited about. One week into her new role, she has had the pleasure (and challenge) of working with the littlest Players in My Little Adventure (ages 3-5).

Thea finds Chickenshed to be an easy, comfortable and enjoyable community to be part of as there is always a sense of fun and positivity. She finds it a welcome change from other activities in the city that are loaded with competition and expectation.  The confidence she has gained by the judgement free environment has spilled into other aspects of her life for which she is grateful. What surprises her the most about Chickenshed? "That it is so totally different in the best way possible."

Thea's mom, Caroline, also enjoys being part of the community having passed many happy hours with other parents in the lobby of the 14Y and volunteering backstage during performances. While she is witness to some of the process by doing so, the magic and mystery of the show is still preserved. She is pleased and impressed by the  practitioners and the relationships they build with the Players.

Thea is a born and bred New Yorker and loves her Long Island City home in Queens. Have you ever known someone who takes the ferry to school every day? Well, now you do! We are so thankful that Thea and Caroline are part of the Chickenshed family!

NEW OPPORTUNITIES

Can't get enough of Chickenshed? Now is your opportunity to learn a new skill or hone an old one!

Several weeks ago, a series of workshops began where participants are becoming empowered dancers through learning the fundamental steps and accompanying language.  In just four weeks one Player proudly announced, "I am a dancer!"

The next program will be Group Vocals with an emphasis on harmony, musical theatre songs and various genres. The seven-week series begins on March 15th.

Increase your love of musical theatre by discovering how the actual stage improves your onstage presence on March 29th with a new one day workshop opportunity. Learn about Set Design from our beloved set designer Greg Stevens and about Props from a professional at Propstar NYC.

If these new add-ons prove successful, future programs may include Acting & Improv, Physical Acting and ASL.

Programs have additional tuition however financial assistance is available. No one should miss out!

CHICKENSHED NYC IN THE COMMUNITY

Chickenshed is just finishing a 10-week outreach program at BWL school on the Upper East Side - thanks to our Player Rohan and his parents.

For an hour each week, several theatre practitioners work with a dozen students in grades K-5 to devise their own musical. Next month, Rohan and his schoolmates will perform their original piece for a school assembly and then after school for friends and families.

BWL is so impressed they have signed up for another 10-week session. Through outreach programs, we can share our inclusive methodology with others and hopefully recruit more Players to our community.

Do you think your child's school would benefit from an inclusive Chickenshed experience? If so, reach out to Elaine, Cyndi or Elliot - they would be happy to tell you more!
